About the National Research Fund
The National Research Foundation (NRF) is a South African state organization mandated by an Act of the National Parliament to: "contribute to national development by promoting and supporting research through funding, human resource development, and the provision of necessary research facilities; but also to improve the quality of life of all people while fast-tracking the development of postgraduate students in high-impact, priority, and vulnerable disciplines."
As a result, NRF has implemented a new postgraduate funding policy in which postgraduate funding allocations will be guided by the principles of equity of opportunity, representation, prioritization, and improved access and success. For the academic year 2022, NRF is seeking final-year South African students interested in pursuing postgraduate honors degrees in any field of study at any national public university or university of technology. The NRF is intended to fund postgraduate studies for any citizen up to the completion of their doctoral studies. However, age will be considered with each application level of study.
The NRF postgraduate funding for 2023/24 is intended to assist honours students in pursuing full-time studies in any South African public university in all areas of Science, Engineering, Technology, Social Sciences, and Humanities, including Indigenous Knowledge Systems, with a focus on research aligned with any of the National Priority Research Areas.
